City of Williamsburg Strawberry Plains Neighborhood Revitalization

Overview

The Strawberry Plains neighborhood originally included low-to-moderate income single-family homes that fronted Strawberry Plains Road. The housing units were in substandard condition and required rehabilitation. Large parcels of undeveloped land behind the housing units provided an opportunity for new affordable housing construction.

Approach

In conjunction with the City of Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority began assembling land for the purpose of affordable single-family home construction. A planning study conducted by K.W. Poore & Associates, Inc. led to an award of CDBG grant funding. As a result, the City and RHA have successfully rehabilitated five existing homes and constructed and sold forty-seven new affordable homes.
