Town of South Boston Comprehensive Plan

Overview

South Boston, Virginia is a community of 8,500 residents strategically located at the convergence of U.S. routes 58, 360, and 501. Much like the rest of Southside Virginia, the Town has traditionally depended upon the tobacco and textile industries as its employment base. Because of the downturn in these industries, the Town has found itself declining both physically and economically since the 1990s.

Approach

K. W. Poore & Associates, Inc. prepared the 2002-2022 Comprehensive Plan in cooperation with community leaders. Working closely with the Planning Commission, Town Council, and Town staff, existing conditions were analyzed, potentials for development identified, and recommendations developed for the future.

The plan focused on attracting a diverse mix of new residents and business developments. It also served to maintain the area's high quality of life and low cost of living through a series of goals and objectives along with implementation strategies.
